Integrated Community Development Project (ICDP)

Activities under this programme has been planned for selected 6 districts. Three out of these districts come under Eastern province namely, Ampara, Trincomalee, and Batticaloa. They were severely affected by war and now almost all affected people are relocated from the rehabilitation camps. However, they are still facing challenges in meeting their basic needs. Other three districts are namely Nuwara Eliya, Badulla and Moneragala. These districts are considered very remote and backward compared to other districts in the Island.

All selected districts population comprises different ethnic groups such as Sinhalese, Tamils, and Muslims. Most of the families in these districts belong to low-income families and there is a felt need for external support in empowering them by introducing livelihood development opportunities to improve their level of income and to reduce poverty as a result.

The overall goal of the project is to reduce poverty among the target communities in selected Districts through sustainable livelihood development activities.

Forest conservation with community participation

Hill Country Rain Forest, Evergreen Forest and top soil Conservation with community participation is a project which focuses on Climate Change and food security.
According to the Global Assessment of Forest and Soil Degradation in Sri Lanka, major contributors to land degradation are, clearance of forest cover, soil erosion and soil fertility degradation. Exploitation of ground water and water pollution are also becoming a cause for land degradation. About 48 percent of land in Sri Lanka was degraded due to above indicated causes.
By identification of natural disasters which are continually experienced at current days, NBA-SED had worked out a proposal with hill country rural communities – especially women and youth, to implement by giving the highest priority for rain forest conservation and evergreen forest conservation and poverty alleviation.
